a sampling of some really random questions

a sampling of some really random questions playing about in my mind:

1. why do men need skin whitening products?

2. how is it that the boss always calls you when you have already left the office, and not on days when you actually stay late?

3. what is the real meaning of 'when your time comes'? or is it just a cheap watch ad tagline?

4. are bitchy/apathetic/ stupid people ever aware of their own bitchiness/apathy/stupidity? which leads me to the next:-

5. how can i literally knock sense into such people?

6. where is a person's gaydar located? i'm still looking about for mine.

and finally:-

7. why, oh why, why do strange, weird, peculiar people randomly come up to me and tell me strange, weird and peculiar things? cue my previous posts.
do i have an invisible neon sign on my forehead attracting them that i m not aware of?

see. i m not all that serious all the time. :P

and anyone who has any answers is free to drop me a line or leave it in the comment box.

Memories of Legal Aid at Tenaganita

today marks the end of my legal aid at Tenaganita - 14 days of compulsory legal aid as part of the completion of pupillage in Malaysia.

to begin with, it was my second choice after AWAM, and in truth, it was spurred by this.

people thought it had a lot to do with Women's Rights - i think the -nita part in the name fooled all of them. but it was actually all about migrant workers and their rights.

training was a blast, but it didn't prepare me for what came to be. i started out with documentation of cases - boring and mind numbing. and calculation of wages, which gave me a headache.

later i progressed to interviewing the migrant workers who came to the centre with their complaints. myanmarese illegals - chins who ran across the border looking for safety and shelter, only to find that there was none to be had here, only employers who fed them spoiled food scraps and locked them out without any reason.

one friday, i called up an employer to ask her side of the story once, and she yelled at me, demanding to know how the hell a fellow Malaysian could gang up with a foreign worker to oppress Malaysians and that she wanted to sue me and sue Tenaganita. i freaked out at first - which led to Lai Kuan's extremely kind gesture of taking me out to tea after our duty was over. i learned to keep calm and to handle such abusive people as a result, though. and the second time was a lot better.

another memorable incident was heading down to Klang by bus with 2 Indians (from India) who couldn't speak Malay or English while my friend, Wee Woon and i couldn't speak a word of Tamil. we ended up in the Indian quarter, negotiating with a travel agent who was holding on to the Indians' passports. we depended on sign language to communicate - chicken and duck talk again!!! Wee Woon pounced on the nearest Indian man to translate for us. (the Indian women at the bus stop were giving us funny looks as we were the only Chinese there) and then we went in and settled matters.

after this was over, the Indians and Wee Woon and myself shared a packet of 'kacang puteh' outside the travel agency. phew.
then it was time to take 2 other Indians to make a claim at the Port Klang Labour Dept. (which turned out to be in Pandamaran, NOT Port Klang - a lot nearer) . luckily these 2 Indians could speak Malay. :P
the funny bit was when i had finally transcribed his story - only the Malaysian part, since the Indian part was long and written in Hindi, the labour officer called the employer who shouted over the phone, which i held at a distance (see, i learned from my earlier experience) ...
SAYA HANTAR MEREKA BALIK TONGSAN BARU TAU!
er, in case you failed to notice, the workers were INDIAN. meh. :P

ultimately the day ended with marvelous Bak Kut Teh and Cendol - 3 cheers for delicious Klang food courtesy of Wee Woon, native Klangite. :)

i cannot forget how i helped negotiate/mediate the case of 40 Bangladeshi workers and an irate sub-contractor and i cheered when he was willing to return their passports (btw, it's an offence to detain a person's passport without their consent) all the way in Bangi Labour Dept. in the end, i acted as a sort of court interpreter/registrar.

and how i fell on my last day of duty, just outside the Subang Jaya Labour Dept. the Bangladeshi worker tried to pull me up, but i think he made my arm's injuries worse. :(
i limped all the way to KL and i limped all the way back.

i remember also the Sudoku moments on Friday, when Lai Kuan, Melanie, Zaza and Lally and myself played Sudoku to quicken the pace of a slow day. i learned to like Sudoku because of that, although i m still horribly slow. and careless. amazing, since i have a phobia of numbers to begin with. i m also amazed at how Lai Kuan and Zaza could discuss how to construct Sudoku puzzles when i was struggling away. you will need something to do when you wait at the Immigration Dept in Putrajaya - it puts any local wet market to shame, how disorganised and hot it is.

all in, i felt an amazing sense of satisfaction at having helped a few migrant workers achieve justice. the things we Malaysians are capable of - abuse and withholding wages, it's nothing to be proud of.
and i am angry at the system which can afford to make the rich richer but can do nothing to protect the rights of Myanmarese refugees. for crying out loud, where do you expect them to go? what do you expect them to do? you give them refugee cards, but what's the use? they can still get detained by the police, by RELA, locked up just like animals.

thank you to my legal aid mates esp Wee Woon and Lai Kuan, Flo and the other people at Tenaganita, Melanie, Steven ... i've learned so much. and i appreciate the support and advice, Lai Kuan. really do! :)

so if you're chambering in KL, on the verge of picking something for legal aid - i would recommend Tenaganita. you WILL make a difference, it depends on you.

snapshots from chambering - part 1

[random cursing. the email computer's down again. so cannot send out emails...and there are deadlines due! argggh!!!]

"Hello, boleh saya bercakap dengan [insert name of govt department]" - in a sweet voice.
On hold music... cue to hum along [grumble about inefficiency of govt, sounding ornery and a bit mean.]
"Oh ...Selamat pagi encik/cik....etc etc" - in a sweet voice again.

WHAT? All the computers with pendrive are in use? Library computers full ah?

sit down and ponder. or move around very fast. lots and lots of paper, and things go missing so easily. btw, has anyone seen my silver pen??? i've found my companies act back, but now...???

food in the corner, biscuits and the occasional chocolate. we all need a little bit more chocs to brighten up our dreary days. dreary but not boring ya.

A post-election ... POST (pun definitely intended!)

From where i was, voting went by rather smoothly - my grandparents, followed by my parents then me and my sibs went to Marian Convent to vote ...

the next exciting part was watching the results. for the last one, i was gung-ho and more importantly, free enough to stay the whole night to watch the entire results of the election.
this time around, it was a case of spirit willing, flesh weak. i slept in at 12 something while my dad continued watching the tv updates.

anyway, i read the news and yes, we HAVE denied BN 2/3rds majority.
and Perak is officially an opposition state.

but the bigger issue on my mind is quo vadis - where do we go from here?

i am heartened that the people have spoken, and spoken so vocally too. but what next?

for one thing, i really hope that the opposition will keep to their promises and that the truth about so many of the things the previous government have kept hidden from us will come out.
and also, now that the opposition IS in power, they need to start thinking about planning and fulfilling the nation's policies.
time to start walking the talk, my friends.

here's to a good four years ahead!

election 2008 / the final month of chambering / to the people i love

election 2008 is here! this being a non-partisan blog, i have refrained from promoting the virtues and/or vices of any of the parties running this time.
all i m saying is that i hope all of you who are of age have registered and will do your duty wisely and responsibly.
as things go, read, think, pray and then act.
i admit i m tired of looking and listening to the propaganda being displayed all around me ... there's only so many repeats of how great the country is doing now that i can take.
(comparing us to myanmar? you gotta be kidding me. why not sudan? or maybe even iraq? they're a lot worse off, no?)
i'll be back in ipoh with my brother and the rest of the family to go and vote. even my 85 year old grandparents are voting - what excuse have you got?

***

one month more to the completion of my pupillage. enough with the formalities! i m thankful i passed my ethics exam, and now it's a matter of staying alive to file my papers for my long call. so many nitty-gritty things to settle!
in 2 minds about having my call moved in ipoh or in kl. if it's in ipoh, it will be more convenient for family to come and give me their support. if it's in kl, kawan-kawan can come as well as other colleagues (who can make it!) ... will think about it, and let all of you know. so if you can make it, do come. there's tea afterwards too (in other words, jamuan ringan per Malaysian style) ...

***

to the people i love, thank you for being who you are. i know that you're going through some tough times, but believe me, you'll make it.
i look up to you guys and i m glad for the friendship - the laughter, the tears, the stories, the support and care ...
so Ins and Eliz, we'll beat this together. hang in there!
God bless you and you're always in my prayers. Amen

from pertama complex to pudu plaza to sg wang

i have always associated Pertama Complex with one thing - creditors meetings! hahaha.
so i was really surprised when Tina brought me there on her camera hunting quest.
Pertama Complex was ok overall, but something really needs to be done about the horrendous layout and lack of parking ticket machines. no signs, so we got lost looking for the entrance and exit (which looked like those doors to substations marked 'BAHAYA / DANGER/ etc' or toilet doors. quite inconspicuous!)

then it was on to pudu plaza. the yong tau fu i ate at a shop nearby was simply marvellous! ;)
really loved the display at pudu plaza - it showed a model of shophouses in old pudu and the attention to detail was stunning. it was one of the moments i wish i had a camera on me to share this image with all of you. the wooden shutters, the crumbling posts, even the model benches on the verandahs ...
i think that it was quite funny to hear the guy in the camera shop converse with Tina - he spoke in Cantonese to her English. it was a real case of 'chicken and duck talk'. in any event, they understood each other so i guess that should count for something.

we adjourned to Ah Lian paradise aka Sg Wang Plaza shortly after. it was here that i established a few things:-
1. the salesgirls at the shops and places i normally go to remember me, even if i haven't been there for ages. it's nice to be remembered. :)
2. the layout is still confusing even after all this while. we got lost again! this time trying to look for the exit. but in the end we made it! all that walking was exhausting though.
3. anime posters are evil. especially when you can get them 4 for RM10. no, i only got one in the end. Heee....Bleach poster with Renji and Byakuya. two 'lengchais' to look at before i go to bed. :P
i think i built up quite an appetite for dinner since we walked round the whole of Petaling Street without finally deciding on where to eat. but all's well ends well, since we ended up eating in Sunway Damansara. :P

thus ends how i spent FT Day. i love public holidays. :)

from raja chulan to tun razak

i drove all the way from raja chulan to tun razak yesterday, thanks to tina and her stunts, one of which nearly resulted in me knocking into a traffic policeman and causing a minor traffic jam at a busy intersection, i forget which.
my first thought - OMG, am i gonna get a summons? well, if i did knock him down, i wouldn't be here now, would i?

and finally where did we end up? after about 40 minutes of indecision about what to eat?
(see my earlier entry on choosing makan places)

eating claypot chicken rice in a rundown, seedy part of town by the roadside. complete with pirated dvd sellers and dodgy karaoke/massage parlours. and dark alleys. with the obligatory small kid running about with no adult in sight.

well, it's true.
HIDUP MENJADI-JADI DENGAN TINA KOOI. heee...

tina, if you're reading this, i love you even though i repeatedly said i wanted to kill you last night. and thanks for the adventure. :)

what is the meaning of 'It's Complicated (tm)'?

can someone please enlighten me on what the meaning of 'It's Complicated (tm)' as found in Friendster (tm) profiles means?

does it include situations where for instance, you are in love with your brother's girlfriend's third cousin who is in fact divorced from your uncle who is now having an affair with the lady down the street who owns a Chihuahua? and the other party isn't sure how he or she feels? or that you're not even sure what you're feeling - lust, love, or both or just boredom?

or where you are still not sure which team you bat for? ... happens.

i've always wanted to know. thank you.

the last hour of 24th July 2007

Hello to all, and thank you for a wonderful birthday, give or take one or two things. :P mostly work.

i turned 24 today - on the 24th of July 2007. what a lovely date-24/7/2007. :)

well, the day started off pretty well. my chambering colleagues got me and yee keat a choco banana cake from secret recipe and sang the birthday song super loudly. sungguh terharu...:)
followed by lunch at secret recipe at the weld - long, luxurious, leisurely. :P. the 3 Ls.
and ...
WORK. yes. WORK which finally ended in my being the last chambee to leave the office!!!
(at this moment, i still have at least 3 more things to settle. and ... ugh! i understand about only maybe 70% of what i m doing)

ah. right. then i had dinner at coliseum cafe with tina. tak jadi makan german food. i STILL want to eat german food though, one of these days.
'ich habe eine Bratwurst mit eine Kartoffelsalat, eine tasse Tee und Eis mit Sahne.'
'ich will esse Deutsch gerichte. Ja. Morgen? Morgen. Sonntag morgen. X)
but it was quite an experience. and the food was good. not to mention captain morgan who took a pix of both of us. hee. and asked us for an RM5 tip. :P

driving in kl at night, when i m super stresssed - i don't appreciate how beautiful it can be.
but tonight, i looked at the city in a whole new different light. and if i weren't needing to finish up some other stuff after i shower, would write a poem. well, there's always another time.

righto. i m NOW 24 years old. i feel old. but hell, life goes on. now off to the shower, and a little rest, before i plunge back in. :)

p/s thank you to EVERYONE who made this day great. Harn, Tina, Siew Wee, Za etc ... all the friends who smsed and Friendster messaged and Friendster commented, chambee colleagues, and family members ... and ah, i love the watch. thank you so much.
I LOVE ALL OF YOU. :)

my life, at the moment

hello dear friends!

the fact you're reading this shows that you care. :)

first off, i will be officially starting my chambering/pupillage tomorrow. wish me luck and all the best!

secondly, it's 7 days more to my mum's birthday and 23 more to mine. if your mths skills are super bad, that translates into 8 july for my mum and 24 july for me. now, i've been asked what i want for my birthday. actually, the sad truth is ...I DON'T KNOW. but i think i will get inspired when it gets closer, and yes, i'll let all of you know! so you can do the necessary. hahahaha.

thirdly, i am entering the ipoh starwalk - it's a 7 km walk. this is a first for me. never really went for all this back in school or even uni days. but there's always a first time, no? i'll let all of you know how it went. :) be sure to tune in!

righto, back to other things that call for my attention. aka real life!

where to eat??!!

i don't know if you or your friends have ever faced this problem of deciding where to eat.
for what it's worth, this is the problem which has plagued my kawan-kawan and me every time we go out to lepak in a shopping mall.
someone will go "oh, it's time for lunch. where should we eat ar?"
fast food, 'expensive' food, chinese, indian, malay, western? japanese...? just kidding - you guys know i hate eating raw food!
followed by lots of walking around, trying to decide what and where to eat. sometimes it can get to ridiculous lengths of time. like a half hour to 45 minutes. all the while we are getting hungrier and hungrier. and the crowds are piling up in all the makan places.

which is why i have been designated 'Official Food/Meal Decider'. except where someone has a craving for a specific type of food, i decide where we all eat. and that's that.
the decision making process involves collecting and collating data from my friends such as e.g.
"you had kfc the other day? ok, scratch that!"
"right, you're allergic to beef."
"on a tight budget ka? i see. so that leaves out Restaurant ABC"
whereupon, after balancing all the factors, i will decide. ha, and my decisions/recommendations re eating and good food seldom go wrong. maybe almost never (perasannya...! :P)

it came to a point this that my absence resulted in the suggestion of "Let's call up Petrina and ask her where to eat" after a lingering in the valley of indecision. ahahah, too bad i wasn't around.

man, i like my job ...!

computer blues :(

i've lost everything. well, almost.

yet another round of reformatting - this time DIY with my brother guiding me through the steps, after my computer crashed (spectacularly) last night.
and that means lost pictures, lost downloads, lost documents. among other things.

so goodbye to my kl tower, lawnite, lunch and baby Claire pix. your Auntie Petrina is very sorry...

if you ask me, yes, i m sad. but i've learned a lot today. i learned that a 3 year old computer cannot sustain too many activities at one time, ADOBE downloads/updates are pure evil - it crashed after i downloaded the latest updates for that programme, and reformatting the computer is not as difficult as it seems. but i'm still 'sakit hati' about the whole thing. not to mention that the computer is not as yet, fully functional.

i m still tweaking the settings, and expect it to be fully up by the time the weekend rolls around.
anyway, what's happened happened already. so what can i say?

exam season...

hey to all,

good luck and all the best with your exams - it's currently exam season now in local public unis...
you are in my prayers. :)

and also,
have a blessed easter ... (it's still Easter Monday by the Catholic calendar)

my exams start on the 20th - German, next paper is 29th - Evidence (which is a Sunday! good heavens, what are these people thinking? i know about the whole pertabalan YDPA business and it's a good thing, but still, exams should not be on Sundays, it just doesn't feel right... :P) and i close with CPC aka Criminal Procedure Code on 2nd May.

til we meet again, auf wiedersehen and God bless!

in summary

i miss someone. a lot. didn't think i would. but yes, i do.

there are new challenges awaiting me, in the metaphysical arena, and i am to answer really, only 1 question: am i ready? i think, i feel i am. there is a way to move forward, surely.

i am feeling stressed from a variety of things, ranging from trial to evidence to criminal procedure to preparing for exams to looking for a place to chamber to finding the most efficient and time-saving way of cleaning up my room with its accumulated junk from 3 years of law school. anyone have boxes to spare me? much obliged if you do have. :)

i know i need a retreat at some point. probably after exams.

and...yahoo! i m going back to ipoh this weekend with my sister! i can get to see my grandparents, my parents, the kiddies and the fishies. :) though i am sorry to hear that the DBI fish died. :( i love all of you!

ok, that's my life for now. in summary. take care and be good. (sigh)
someone i know so well used to tell me that.

the petrina7 experience of watching anime

as most of you now know, i have developed a great liking for anime and manga as of late last year. this is something some of you cannot understand, but i'll leave it at that.

on to the petrina7 experience of watching anime at home...

i turn on the tv, remote control in hand. the theme music of the anime plays.
i am enjoying myself.
then someone (i think it's my sister or mother) expresses doubt as to whether i understand japanese - because i prefer watching anime in the original japanese, rather than mostly passable english dubs or horrendous malay dubs.
pointed reply : there is such a thing as subtitles, you know. my sarkiness is ignored.
my brother walks by, and he says that 'the fellow with the deep voice is sure to be the bad guy'. actually he's not wrong most of the time.
there is a distinct sensation of my sister's eyeballs rolling in their sockets Absurd she says.
and the feeling of a group of sane people humouring a lunatic with infinite patience ...

ah! this sums up the petrina7 experience of watching anime at home. :)

in the midst of doing my evidence assignment

it's the ungodly hour of 3.11 am.

i m in the midst of doing an assignment on horrors...hearsay evidence...and i have a case of assignment writing block, some sort of variant of writer's block. but i'll get over it fast, i hope, because the deadline is Tuesday, 9 am. trust the lecturer to set such an exact time and date so as to make sure that no one will miss her class on that day. i don't want to repeat the evidence test experience which was like a re-play of that scene in Home Alone when the Macallister family was rushing to get to the airport gate. i can hear Trepak from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite in my head already.

what more?
1 stick pack Milo 3 in 1 + 1 XL sized packet of Chek Hup white coffee (the only coffee brand i drink, all the way from Ipoh!) = enough caffeine and sugar to keep you awake the whole night through. i love the way it froths at the top, with the little white flecks and the wonderful blend of coffee and milo, so harmonious. try it, you'll love it!

trust me, i never drank coffee before i came to law school. now if i don't get my coffee, i become like a wilted flower, or the Duracell bunny minus the Duracell battery. so yeah, here's to coffee! coffee has claimed yet another addict...:)

right, now, back to work! (whistles softly)
