reframing the pro-life movement

reflecting on a year that has passed with both terrifying swiftness and a dreadful lingering slowness, i have come to realise the wider arc of the pro-life movement, one which is normally associated with abortions and euthanasia.

i believe that our lives should reflect a pro-life stance in that we choose life over death in all things and all circumstances. and not just in matters of whether unborn children or the terminally ill should live.

the edict is found in Deut 30: 19 -20

'I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and cleaving to him; for that means life to you and length of days, that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.'

and what does choosing life mean? simply obeying God and loving Him, as stated above, for St James is quick to point out what leads to death:-

James 1:14

'... but each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin; and sin when it is full-grown brings forth death.'

each of our small choices is either an affirmation of life, or an affirmation of death.
and let the sum total of our small choices reflect a conscious decision to live and love.

amen.
