the ol’ (Un)Reliable i am referring to is none other than my less than trusty Nokia 3310 which has since been replaced by a much more reliable phone (although it is still early in the day to say for sure…)
the first time i got into minor trouble with the phone was when i switched it off during haluansiswa back in first year and didn’t know the pin to switch it back on. fortunately Jeson and my brother were on hand to fix things up.
then there were elements of Misteri Nusantara connected to it…like the time when i went down for supper with my room mate in college, having left it with the secure words ‘Keypad Locked’…only to return to find it showing up a name … of someone i really wanted to have nothing to do with. freaky! i looked at my room mate and she looked at me and our eyes got bigger and bigger. i asked her if this was her idea of a joke and she denied it strenuously … i still haven’t figured out exactly what happened that night. was the fact that there was a full moon relevant?
well, this phone had a temperament of its own, choosing to vibrate or not when in silent mode. so there would be times when people would attempt to call or sms me and i would not know because heck, it was still as a tombstone in my pocket. worse would be when the screen would break out in some jumble of graphics and i could
not use the phone at all. i would then give it a solid thwack or two to restore it to order. this sometimes helped. otherwise the phone remained obdurate. it would only choose to come back to itself after some time.
it had thrills, spills and people like Siew Wee attempting to throw it against the wall after it had acted up for what must be the ‘00th time. fortunately (or not) i stopped her…
then messages. Kai Ling had this illuminating comment to make regarding this phone’s reception of messages…
(translated from Cantonese. it sounds a lot better in the original)
if I m in trouble and need a saviour, by the time I sms you and it gets through, I would have died already.
this was accompanied by many other people who agreed entirely with this sentiment…the list would be too long to mention in its entirety.
there was the time my best friend came down from uum to klcc on a field trip with her coursemates. she smsed me on thursday but i only received it on sunday. so you can imagine my surprise when i got an sms asking me where i was on friday. i found this fearfully abrupt and puzzling as i thought she was in uum all along. as luck would have it, i was actually in klcc at that time. talk about coincidences. finally, having given up on smsing me, she called me and we managed to meet up there.
ever thought of calling me? prepare to have moments when my ex-phone would refuse to register your call. it was pretty dicey, about 50-50, getting in touch with me through my ex-phone. yeah, the number of people who have tried and failed, there should be some sort of memorial plaque for them.
all in, it served me ok during my first two years in uni. many thanks for its service but im still glad my sis got me a new hp. nothing too fancy but i think you will find it easier to contact me.
well then. auf wiedersehn and farewell, Nokia 3310.

Ooh? Got a new phone? :)
Ya lah, your phone damn cacat lah, but you should know not to ever use violence or force against electronic items because it will not solve the problem. Some TLC at the hardware or phone shop should do the trick. Reminds me not to leave any electronic items alone with you!! O_o;;
Force? i gave my ex-phone many chances ... but well, it's all history now.
yeah...my sis bought me a new hp. simple phone, no camera or mp3 player etc...but it's a lot better than the old one.
