today after class me, yinharn and siewwee went to gsc midvalley to watch v for vendetta...
first off, allow me to get one complaint out of the way before i proceed to the heart of the matter. the screenplay should have been written or at least vetted by a Brit beforehand because it certainly sounded like an American trying to sound British (read: weird). there was excessive use of the words 'bollocks' and 'Jesus Christ' as if those are the only words that Brits use when they are upset and/or angry. also, Natalie Portman's accent was as shaky as an attap hut in a high wind...
the storyline was good, fast-paced and exciting. from the very beginning the atmosphere is set, you can feel that something is very wrong with the set-up. the voice of london was a dead giveway...death to all Muslims, homosexuals, immigrants...and it is eerily reminscent of what is going on in the real world. from there, the story progresses in a spiral of vengeance, action and drama...no spoilers here, no worries...
just want to say that i find V and Chief Inspector Finch cool ... i can identify with Finch's character, i think i would be the kind of person who can see things as they are developing and heading towards a powerful and sometimes destructive conclusion...and he had an instinct that works much the same way as mine. it is inexplicable, sometimes the details are wrong, but the fundamentals remain accurate.
i looked at the symbol of the totalitarian party in the movie and i was reminded suddenly of the KKK crosses...and of the monstrosities committed on the flimsiest of excuses.
strength through unity unity through faith (sounds nice, maybe even quite inspiring doesn't it? watch the show to find out why it gives me the creeps!)
from this movie it would appear more than possible to pervert faith into something far uglier and extremely far removed from what faith really is. throughout history man has used God's name to justify the worst of abuses. Hitler was not the only one, and it is unlikely he will be the last because man forgets all too easily...
a question i found myself asking is whether violence is the only answer to resolving such situations. perhaps in an extreme situation it might be justified. but that would raise the question of when a situation is extreme.
i recommend this movie, and what i appreciate most is how it makes you think about the things going on around us - the US aggression, George W Bush and his justifications for invading Iraq and Afghanistan (God asked me to do it!) , how homosexuals, immigrants and Muslims are viewed in today's suspicious and hate-filled climate...as one poignant line put it how words changed their meaning, when different started becoming dangerous...it moves and touches and provokes you into challenging your assumptions on the status quo and what is real and whether we are content for things to remain as they are, or that it can be so much better...
