Dona Catalina and Susan Boyle

i wonder how many of you remember 'Yo Soy Betty La Fea' before Ugly Betty came out? there was a character named Dona Catalina who was Betty's friend and who encouraged her to come out of her shell - bringing out Betty's physical beauty and giving her the confidence to live life to the fullest.
i loved that character to bits and i remember thinking how amazing it was that she didn't get Betty to go under the knife for showtime-type beast to beauty transformations, and that it was simply getting Betty to try something new and to look at herself with new eyes.

we all need friends like that, who see us through the eyes of hope and fulfilled potential. who believe in us, although we've stopped believing in ourselves at some point or other. who help keep us going on and going further than where we used to be.

and to me, to be such a friend is realising part of my mission here. no matter who you were, what you've done, tomorrow is a new day of hope and the chance of making something beautiful out of your life. it's hard to believe in an invisible God, but if you meet someone with outstretched hand, it's a whole lot easier to believe and accept that kind of love.

Re Susan Boyle - the now famous entrant in Britain's Got Talent. we all need to have a little of that in us - that courage to pursue our dreams in the face of rejection and ridicule. just a little for a start.

who says success should be denied the seemingly fat and frumpy?

limitations are real, but they shouldn't be self-imposed. there's a difference between self-imposed limitations and those which you discover in the course of living. and discovery can lead to learning ways of overcoming.

i cried when i heard her sing. the lyrics seemed to be a poetic reflection of a life we can imagine her having led so far. but soon it became the triumphant cry of a woman who dared to try.

i will root for her from my little corner of the globe. you go and make us all proud. :)
