slimming centres and me...:)

slimming centres have been popping up all over the place, invading the print media and various business centres and shopping centres...they're everywhere!

lost weight in just a nap (sic)
5 kg lost in 2 weeks...try it and see...
weight loss is painless and easy...new slimming packages available... pay by instalment

the most noticeable thing about them is the promotional counters they set up in shopping centres*. slim (!) and pretty young women who have that gleam in their eye when they spot me coming. aha! a potential customer... they march up to me and thrust a leaflet in my hands. leaflets full of impossible claims. one even asked me don't you want to diet? while they are pushing paper, they also talk, almost non-stop about their special introductory packages etc etc. i don't know, i ve more or less zoned out by then. besides after a while, they start to sound the same.

so what do i do? do i stand there agog, listening to their spiel and maybe even buying into it? or should i rip up those offending leaflets and storm off, feeling insulted? should i wish i wasn't so big so that i keep attracting this sort of attention? ought i glare at them fiercely and keep my distance?

well, i won't deny that i m fat. (put in the most direct way possible) but at the same time i don't believe in quick fix solutions for these sort of problems. lasting solutions take time to achieve. and i know that no matter what, these girls have a job to do as well.

so i smile, nod and walk away. if i m in a particularly good mood, i might even thank them. after all it's to look at, marvel at the outlandish claims printed and ultimately recycle...

* if you are in ipoh, tesco is one of the said hotspots of such counters.
